I finally scored myself a Model 66 no dash and am ecstatic! Unlike the one I was looking at last week with the suspect red ramp, this one appears to be all original and in great shape. Included is the original matching box with paper work and cleaning kit. The serial is 2K68xxx and the sights are all stainless. The box has a 'T' for stock, which I believe indicates the target Goncalo Alves grips (please correct me if I am wrong).

Anyhow, wondering if the guru's can help ID the approx date of birth and let me know if this is truly one of the 'early' serial's. Also any idea what serial range S&W used for the 1st run of these Model 66's? Everything I see about nKn serial numbers lists 4 trailing numbers. Mine is 9K9xxx, with only 3 trailing numbers. Can anyone explain why? S&W just confirmed that this was a 1976 SN. The most commonly seen pattern is six numbers and one letter (1K23456, 65K4321, 123K456, etc) but until the later 1970s they didn't use the preceding zeros.

There was a K654, a 1K1, a 2K123, a 3K55, and a 9K1, etc. Control Cpu Fan Speed Windows Vista. They seemed to stop doing that and stuck to six numbers plus the letter in the late 1970s starting with 10K0001. FYIMO - I appreciate your feedback on the question of 'to shoot or not to shoot?' That makes alot of sense. I personally do intend to hold onto it for the long haul. It was offered as a used gun, but the revolver show's very little wear.

Question - Is there a tell tale sign to determine weather a gun has been fired? (other than the factory test firing assuming they did that back then) People can clean up a stainless gun really well by they can't hide the face where the firing pin is and it can have marks on it and if you study closely with a magnifying glass the upper area around the forcing cone and the end of the cylinder by the barrel you can see residue, coloration, and even some light almost pitting from the heat. A factory unfired gun has every other cylinder test fired only once. However if they sold it as used I would think either the dealer or priviate individual knew it had been fired at least a little. They are all to happy to pass off a gun as unfired if it has the box and goodies and is near perfect condition usually with a comment like 'We think it's unfired but can't confirm it'. Man you guys are great - I will definitely treat myself to some plain 38's and some +P's that I shoot in my 640 and 642's already.
